Since recently coming out of retirement, Denise Squier-Hornaday has been busy fronting two Brazos Valley bands — Rhythm Coalition, a well-known blues band based in Bryan, and a new classic rock outfit from Brenham, D & The Situation.
2008 Texas Music Awards (TMA) “Female Vocalist of the Year” finalist and TMA’s “Top Rock Vocalist in 2008,” Squier’s strong, soulful vocals have been compared to Ann Wilson of Heart (Diane Sheets, Vocal Consulting Group, Nashville, TN) and Stevie Nicks (John Tenting, World Voice News, Los Angeles, CA). Her performances have been described using phrases like “The place rocked!” and “The emotion-charged real thing”, and “one of the most compelling, throbbing, and exciting shows in memory”.
[From the start of Denise Squier’s gorgeous velvet voice, to the last note, I was hooked. And I hate to say “you know she sounds just like…”, but really, if Olivia Newton-John fronted Jefferson Starship…well, you get the idea. — Jinelle Boyd, My Texas Music]
Her former band Crosswind appeared in major music festivals all over the Lone Star State — including SXSW, headlining concerts and winning “Battle of the Bands” competitions.
In early 2010, Squier retired from the road to be more active in her son’s life, and then married Fred Hornaday later that year. During her retirement, she was still active in music, playing drums for the Brazos Valley Community Band, singing in churches and even serving as the music director at the First United Methodist Church of Caldwell, TX.
Since her son Jonathan left to go to college in the fall of 2018, Squier felt the need to get back into music.
In addition to music, Squier also works as sports editor and reporter for the Burleson County Tribune and teaches journalism at Caldwell High School in Caldwell, TX.
